[Manufacturing] - Opportunities and challenges in the electronic component manufacturing industry in Vietnam

December 7, 2023

In the dynamic landscape of electronic component manufacturing in Vietnam, along with increased investment and collaboration from leading global electronic conglomerates, specifically those from the United States, have created numerous opportunities for Vietnam to participate in the global supply chain. Although domestic enterprises face certain challenges, focusing on effective quality management is key to overcoming these hurdles.

The electronic technology industry is one of the largest worldwide, playing a crucial role in the global economy. Currently, Vietnam stands at the threshold of many opportunities to join the global electronic component supply chain. The surge in investment and collaboration, particularly from the United States with President Joe Biden's state visit to Vietnam, has not only demonstrated confidence in Vietnam's potential and development capabilities but has also opened up significant prospects for the future of the electronic component industry. Additionally, the semiconductor sector in Vietnam is emerging as a destination for many semiconductor manufacturers, attracting the interest and presence of major global players from the United States and South Korea, such as Intel and Samsung, etc. Projects with investments ranging from hundreds of millions to billions of USD for constructing factories and expanding production capacities are clear evidence of the prospects for Vietnamese enterprises in participating in the global semiconductor supply chain.

According to economic experts, Vietnam's economy is currently highly open and increasingly integrated into the international economy. However, a prevailing reality is that the majority of domestic enterprises still face barriers preventing deeper and faster integration into the global supply chain. Firstly, final products often do not meet the stringent requirements of major brands. For instance, "a challenging issue for Japanese companies investing in Vietnam is the difficulty in finding domestic suppliers, especially partners capable of manufacturing products according to their specific requirements," stated Mr. Hideyuki Okada, President of the Japanese Business Association in Ho Chi Minh City. Mr. Chau Minh Nguyen, Vice President of the Dong Nai Business Association, noted that one of the major limitations for many small and medium-sized enterprises in Dong Nai is the lack of a "long-term" development strategy in their business activities. In fact, many businesses in the province still engage in scattered production, lacking the conditions to participate in the global value chain. Conversely, many highly-rated businesses in bidding may not have enough standardized products to sell, or only export a few small and irregular containers, lacking sustainability and high stability. Lastly, Vietnamese enterprises also face fierce competition from foreign companies that also want to join the supply chain, such as China, South Korea, and Japan.

To overcome these challenges, businesses need to place special emphasis on quality control from the production stage to delivery. Implementing effective and synchronized quality management systems in the production process is the key to ensuring that electronic components meet the strict requirements of global customers.

X-ray/CT Inspection Solutions at COMIT

The use of quality management solutions not only helps businesses meet high-quality standards but also brings many benefits, such as time savings and increased production efficiency. Firstly, utilizing modern technology and equipment in the quality inspection process helps shorten the inspection time compared to traditional methods. Automated systems typically have the ability to perform quick and accurate inspection steps, reducing the time spent on quality confirmation. Additionally, using technology to control quality from the early stages of the production process saves time for businesses in the process of recalling defective products, repairs, and re-manufacturing.

In addition to helping businesses save time in production, quality inspection equipment also helps increase production efficiency. Controlling quality from raw materials to the inspection of the final product helps reduce reliance on manual work, minimize human errors, and increase accuracy and consistency in production. Moreover, quality management equipment and systems provide the ability to monitor real-time production, helping businesses detect errors immediately and apply corrective measures from the early stages of the production process. This helps minimize waste and increase the overall efficiency of the production line.
